God of War III es la entrega final de una de las franquicias más populares de Sony, quizás incluso la principal, la más representativa. God of War es definitivamente uno de los mejores juegos de acción, tan importante es su presencia que ha definido el estilo de muchos otros juegos y ha dejado tras de sí una enorme lista de títulos que simulan, o de plano copian su estilo. Ejemplos recientes de ello podemos mencionar el caso de Darksiders o Dante´s Inferno.
El juego comienza justo donde se quedó el anterior. Kratos, acompañado de Gaia y los otros titanes, intentan escalar el monte Olimpo para derrocar a Zéuz. El dios del rayo, con la ayuda de otras deidades, logra contener a los titanes y derriba a Kratos mandándolo hasta el inframundo. Ahora el espartano tendrá que encontrar nuevamente el camino que lo lleve a su gran rival, y deberá enfrentar a algunos dioses dispuestos a matarlo para evitar el final del Olimpo.
GOW es una trilogía en la que de verdad se ha hecho énfasis en las motivaciones del personaje principal. El jugador llega siempre a compartir ese enojo, esa insistencia desesperada por ajustar cuentas con los dioses. Las acciones, diálogos, forma de combate y gestos de Kratos muestran en plenitud su ira y sus deseos de venganza, además, aquellos sentimientos que se van incrementando mientras más se avanza.
God of War tiene uno de los mejores sistemas de combates que se han creado a la fecha, tan intenso, tan responsivo, que ha permanecido prácticamente intacto durante los tres juegos, con apenas algunas modificaciones ligeras y algunos nuevos elementos. Lo que vale la pena destacar es que este sistema se ha perfeccionado al punto que en esta última entrega la precisión de los movimientos del protagonista es absoluta, el personaje siempre hará justo lo que el jugador le indique, no hay otra forma de definirlo.
GOW no es un juego que se pueda vencer únicamente apretando botones una y otra vez, es necesario utilizar combos, cubrirte en el momento preciso, esquivar con maestría los ataques enemigos, saltar en los momentos requeridos, probar diferentes armas y estrategias, estar atento de las barras de energía, magia y accesorios especiales, utilizar los ataques más poderosos con discreción, en fin, es un juego que requiere atención, habilidad y mucha planeación. Constantemente me pasó que eliminaba a un enemigo con mucho esfuerzo y me sentía satisfecho por haber encontrado la estrategia para vencerlo, entonces, de la nada, aparecían otros dos o tres enemigos juntos, iguales al anterior, obligándome a modificar radicalmente la estrategia para vencerlos a todos. Este es un juego que no se tienta jamás el corazón, eso tenlo por seguro.
Pero hablando de los pequeños ajustes que se dan en el modo de juego, uno de los movimientos revisados con los que Kratos cuenta, es el de tomar a uno de sus enemigos y usarlo como ariete para derribar al resto. Este es un movimiento adictivo y poderoso que uno siempre quiere utilizar. Pequeños ajustes como éste hacen que el juego no deje nunca de ser sorprendente y dinámico.
Además de los combates, hay muchas secciones enfocadas a las plataformas. A pesar de que Kratos tiene un salto doble, así como la posibilidad de planear un poco, avanzar sobre las plataformas resulta todo un reto. De seguro terminarás cayéndote algunas veces antes de llegar a tu destino.
El tercer elemento constante son los acertijos que hay que resolver moviendo palancas, haciendo arder contenedores, dando vueltas a mecanismos, golpeando objetos, etc. Quienes han jugado los títulos anteriores descubrirán que se les han dado giros sutiles a estos elementos característicos de la franquicia. La verdad es que estos acertijos no son sencillos y tendrás que tomar tiempo para pensar cómo resolverlos. Además, mientras vas colocando las piezas en su lugar, aparecerán enemigos por todas partes, lo cual hace que el juego fluya de forma más orgánica y no se corte el ritmo. Lo mismo aplica para las secciones de plataformas, donde no sólo hay que estar atento de cuando y donde saltar o moverse, sino que también hay que tener cuidado de los enemigos que intentarán derribarte.
La exploración no es ajena al juego, debes buscar y encontrar cofres cuyo contenido es indispensable para poder vencer a los enemigos. Los accesorios que encuentres te permitirán ir subiendo la fuerza, la capacidad de tu magia, el nivel de vida y la fuerza de los ataques especiales. Es de verdad esencial aumentar tus habilidades si deseas sobrevivir hasta el final, ya que GOW III es uno de los juegos que mayor reto ofrecen, incluso en las dificultades más bajas.
A diferencia de las entregas anteriores donde había un par de armas que no servían demasiado o que sólo utilizabas en un segmento del juego, ahora todas las armas son funcionales y poderosas, puedes escoger cualquiera de ellas y usarla en el momento que lo desees. Esto es más fácil si vas escalando su poder mediante las órbitas rojas.
Uno de los más grandes elementos del juego, que además es uno de los más copiados, es el de las acciones basadas en apretar botones en el momento y ritmo indicados. La franquicia utiliza estas secuencias sobre todo para hacer movimientos finales. Estos movimientos son violentos, visualmente impecables y cuentan con un excesivo, pero satisfactorio, derramamiento de entrañas y sangre. Para mí hoy en día pocas cosas me alegran tanto a la hora de jugar como ver ese círculo rojo que indica que ya puedes intentar terminar con un jefe o un subjefe.
En cuanto al diseño y los gráficos del juego, grandeza y refinación son las palabras claves para definirlos. Los escenarios, algunos enemigos, la cantidad de combos, la dificultad del juego, en fin, todo está hecho a escala gigante, descomunal. No hay pequeñeces en esta franquicia. En alta definición este juego es simplemente hermoso, los reflejos en el piso y el agua, las explosiones, el desplazamiento de las armas, las reacciones de los personajes, todo lo que ves es increíble.
Las voces y actuaciones de los personajes, en especial las de Kratos y los dioses ayudan a crear esta sensación de enorme poder que cada uno de ellos tiene. La música y los efectos de sonido promueven también la sensación de grandeza , devastación y aventura épica.
En cuanto a los elementos extras, el título cuenta con varias dificultades que puedes ir abriendo conforme termines el juego varias veces. Luego de terminarlo por primera vez podrás acceder a arenas de batallas donde deberás demostrar tus habilidades y ganar trofeos. En las arenas podrás probar combos más difíciles y ejecutar los cientos de movimientos que Kratos tiene a su disposición.
